Ash didn’t think she was going to care what Mica did with Sander. After all, he’d tied her up and was going down the road of interrogation in a way she didn’t quite like. A small part of her had hoped that Mica might rough him up. In the end, Sander would heal. If he could take a beating from those snakes in the Games and be unaffected by the whole knife-in-the-back incident, a little physical contact wouldn’t do much to him. He wasn’t like her.

But castration? That was entirely too far. A pang of fear echoed through her chest.

“Mica, for Christ’s sake, I don’t know where the stuff—” She didn’t get the chance to fully finish her statement before Sander nearly ripped her arms off. The chairs they were tied to were strong, with steel frames and a comfortable denim fabric, and were stuck together, pressing their backs against each other’s. So, when Sander lurched, he was strong enough to practically pop Ash’s arms out of their sockets.

“Sander!” she hissed, bending awkwardly to avoid getting her arm snapped. “Sander!”

Sander instantly moved so she wouldn’t be in pain, but he was so close that she felt his brawn in full force against her slimmer frame.

“You get anywhere near me, you little prick, and I’ll kill you!” His voice came out almost as a roar, a throwback to the demonic creature that had come out before. There was only one little problem: if he transformed like this, the cord around their throats would promptly strangle Ash.

There was a series of sounds as Mica, she assumed, removed the bottom part of Sander’s chair. Mica’s voice chilled her. “You weren’t wondering why you were naked?”

Oh. Oh.

Ash knew Sander was shirtless, but her quick glance hadn’t shown that he was nude. This time, she was definitely blushing. The only thing between his bare body and hers was a thin layer of her clothes. She could feel his blood pumping through his smooth skin, faster and faster, hotter and hotter. He was going to transform into whatever it was that she’d seen at the Games—a monster. A demon. Something enormous, with flames and a much thicker neck. The moment he changed, the cord around their throats would tighten and kill Ash.

“Sander! Don’t!”

Bzzzzzzz. The sound of Mica turning on the stun baton sent Ash’s confidence through the floor. Mica came back into her view, twirling a short, handheld, steel device with crackling electricity on the end corralled by a slim cage. He studied Sander carefully.

“Don’t try. I don’t know what you are, but you’ve been going through my sedatives almost as fast as they go in. But even you aren’t able to activate…” Mica faltered. “Whatever you are trying to,” he spit with distaste. He bent down to Ash with what she had earlier thought was a jealous smirk, even as Sander struggled in his bonds. “So, how about it? You going to tell me where your gear is, or shall I fry us some eggs?” With that, he gave her a wink.
